Obituary

Martha Toot Wasson, 91, of Canton, Ohio, died Monday, January 5, 2015. Born in 1923, she was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Toot and a Canton native. Martha graduated from Lehman High School and Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. Upon graduation, she worked in Chicago at one of the nation's largest advertising agencies and ascended to account executive, among the first women ever to hold that position. Martha returned to Canton, where she married Dr. Paul Wasson and put her leadership and dedication to use in the community. A lifelong member of Christ Presbyterian Church who knew every hymn by heart, she founded the church's Cradle Guild. She also served as president of the Junior League and was an active member of the Women's Board of Aultman Hospital, Stark County Medical Society Auxiliary, Canton Garden Club, and Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Association. Known for her quick wit and generous heart, Martha was an avid reader, tennis player, crossword puzzler, needlepoint enthusiast, and bridge player who rarely missed a game with friends. She had a deep love of her family and cherished moments together, from holiday celebrations and graduations to times in Florida. Martha is survived by her brother, Joseph Toot (Marlene); her children, Martha Magoon (Elbert), Barbara Strawn, Paul Wasson (Chris), and David Wasson; and twelve grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Wasson, her sister, Barbara Levitt, and her grandson David Magoon. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of Christ Presbyterian Church. Friends may call one hour prior to the service in the church parlor. The family hopes that remembrances might benefit two organizations that played an important role in Martha's life: Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation, Martha Toot Wasson Scholarship, PO Box 38, Columbus, OH 43216 (www.kappa.org/donation) or American Youth Foundation, Camps Miniwanca and Merrowvista, 6357 Clayton Road, St. Louis, MO 63117 (www.ayf.com).
