IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Martha
Hostetler
February 8, 1927 – June 2, 2024
Martha Jane Grenfell Hostetler
Age 97, of Canton, Ohio. Born in Akron, Ohio, on February 8, 1927, to Pascoe and Elizabeth Grenfell. Martha went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 2, 2024. As Martha would say, "I lived a good life!"
Martha was a graduate of the 1945 class of Cuyahoga Falls High School. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Mount Union (formally Mount Union College), where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta. She taught at Lincoln Elementary School in Cuyahoga Falls, and then at Woodland Elementary in Canton, Ohio, following her marriage to her college sweetheart, Max Miller Hostetler, in 1952. Martha dedicated several years to raising their three children, and then finished out her teaching career at Marlboro Elementary School in Louisville, Ohio.
Martha was a person of many interests who wasn't afraid to experience new things. She enjoyed reading, sewing, painting, flower arranging, and skiing (although reluctantly). She did daily crossword puzzles and enjoyed playing Bridge and board games with family and friends. She was a longtime Mount Union Alumni and was a member of Mount Union Women. Martha was an avid collector of frogs, apples, and Devonshire pottery. She belonged to Questers Timekeepers #903, with whom she shared her love of collecting. Martha was a faithful leader of Girl Scout Troop #687. She was a member of Crossroads United Methodist Church. Martha always looked forward to her summers at her cabin on Black Oak Lake in Land O' Lakes, Wisconsin.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Max. She is survived by her sister Patsy Hissem of Cuyahoga Falls; brother, Percy Grenfell (Maria) of Silver Lake; son, Gary Hostetler (Paula) of Strasburg; daughter, Martha Mickey (Dale) of Columbus; son, Mark Hostetler (Mary Jo) of Maineville; granddaughter, Anne Yano (Chad) of Columbus; grandson, Wade Mickey (Lauren) of La Crosse, Wisconsin; great grandchildren, Eli and Lilly Yano of Columbus; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins in the USA and England.
Martha was a life-long learner and teacher. She will be deeply missed and will always be remembered for her impact on the lives of those who knew and loved her.
The family would like to thank the Allay Senior Care Center staff for loving and caring for Mom these last few months of her life. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Martha's memory may be made to The Philomatheon Society of the Blind, 2701 West Tuscarawas St., Canton, Ohio 44708.
