Obituary

Martha Lurie Cohen from Akron and later Canton and Columbus, died in Columbus Ohio on her 93rd birthday, September 2, 2013, following a lengthy illness with Alzheimer's disease. Martha was straight-forward, honest and a great problem-solver. She was a hard-working, well-organized career mom long before that concept was popular. She was great with numbers and worked many years as bookkeeper and co-owner of the Lawrence Road Market in Canton with her husband of 60 years, Arthur H. Cohen of Canton. Later she worked with her brother-in-law Cy Cohen in Canton's last Kosher butcher shop, Cy's Kosher Market at 30th Street Plaza in Canton. She also found time to devote to supporting those in need, gardening and reading current events. She and Art were life-long members of Shaaray Torah Synagogue and the Colleague Club, both in Canton. She was always attentive to her children, David Cohen (Elizabeth Barnes Cohen) of Columbus, Marlene Cohen (Michael Kidwell) of Silver Spring, Maryland, grandson Alexander Cohen Kidwell of Baltimore, her mother, Rebecca Lurie of Akron, her mother-in-law Fannie Cohen of Canton, sisters and brothers-in-law, and all their children and grandchildren. She always remembered birthdays and graduations, and often organized family festive occasions. Nothing made her happier. She is also survived by her sister and closest friend Jennie Lurie Cohen of Elk Grove Village, Illinois. Martha and Art and Jennie and Cy were closest friends and brothers married to sisters. They provided a strong sense of family love and support for David, Marlene and Jennie and Cy's children, Diana Cohen Schneidman (Wayne Schneidman) of Bolingbrook IL and Michael Cohen (Robert Masczcak) of Schaumburg IL. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Husband Arthur died in 2005. Cy Cohen died in Elk Grove Village IL in 2010. She is also predeceased by her parents Michael and Rebecca Lurie and dear sisters Mary Lurie and Sara Lurie Orlinoff, all of Akron. Donations may be given to Shaaray Torah Synagogue of Canton. Services will be held Monday, September 9 at 11 AM at the Arnold Funeral Home with Cantor Bruce Braun officiating, followed by burial at the Canton Hebrew Cemetery and luncheon at the Shaaray Torah Synagogue.
