Marjorie Whitelaw Bear of Canton, deceased March 22, 2012. Born in 1917 to Edith and Maurice Edward Whitelaw of Akron. She resided in Canton for 73 years. Prior to moving to Canton, she had attended Miss Chamberlain's School and Simmons College in Boston, MA. Throughout her lifetime, she took courses at Akron University and Walsh College. Marjorie volunteered as a Red Cross Gray Lady at Mercy and Aultman Hospitals during WWII. Dedicated to volunteering in the community, she served at House of Loreto for 19 years, recorded talking books for 25 years and was an early youth group advisor at Temple Israel and day camp volunteer at the Jewish Community Center. She was an active fundraiser with United Way, the Jewish Welfare Fund and Walsh College Fund drives. She was a member of many local organizations, including the Canton Symphony League Women's Committee; Stark County Library Volunteers; Canton Museum of Art; Temple Israel Sisterhood; MacDowell Club; Canton Writer's Guild; researcher and profile writer for Canton Museum of Art acquisitions; Friends of the Library; Little Art Gallery; Stark Wilderness Center; Blossom Women's Committee and formerly of Canton Women's Club and Arrowhead Country Club. Marjorie was preceded in death by husband, Bernard Bear and daughter, Juliet Bear-Greene. She is survived by grandchildren, Alison Greene of Alameda, CA; Theodore Greene (Linda) of Northfield, IL; Andrew Greene (Megan) of Chicago, IL; Timothy Greene (Jean) of NY, NY; great-grandchildren Zachary, Abigail, Emily, Madeline, Alexander and Juliet; and sister Helen Moats of Wilmette, IL. The family will have a private memorial at the request of the deceased. Donations may be made to Stark County Library, Canton Symphony, Canton Museum of Art or Temple Israel.
