Obituary

Marie Viverette Wilkof, of Canton, Ohio and more recently, Glen Mills, PA, passed away on Tuesday December 1, 2015 at age 93. She was born on January 7, 1922 in Halifax County, NC. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Ervin Wilkof; her parents, Maggie and Joseph Viverette, and her brothers and sisters. Mrs. Wilkof was a resident of Canton for 60 years. She was well known in the community for her civic, cultural and philanthropic leadership. The various Boards she served on included the Canton Players Guild, Canton Symphony League, YWCA, Timken Mercy Service League, Cultural Center Advisory Board, Hadassah and B'nai Brith Women's Committee. She had also volunteered as General of the Heart Fund Drive, Captain of the Malone College Drive, United Arts Fund Drive and United Way. An extremely successful fundraiser, Mrs. Wilkof served as chairperson for the Symphony Ball, Cultural Center's 1st Cabaret, YWCA's 1st Merry Mart, The Art Institute's King Tut Ball, Jewish Center Ball, and Football Hall of Fame Festival Celebrities Committee. Until Mrs. Wilkof and her husband began dividing their time between Canton and Myrtle Beach, SC and Boca Raton, FL, she was also an active member of Brandeis University Women's Committee, Blossom Center Festival Committee, Canton Civic Ballet, Canton Civic Opera, Canton Club, Canton Woman's Club, Cultural Center Promotion Committee, Sans Souci Garden Club, Hudson Hoagland Society, Temple Israel, Temple Israel Sisterhood, Shaaray Torah Synagogue, Shaaray Torah Sisterhood, and Walsh College Women's Committee. Formerly, she was also a member of Grand Strand (SC) Hospital Auxiliary, Temple Emanuel and Temple Emanuel Sisterhood of Myrtle Beach, SC, Glenmoor Country Club and Boca Raton (FL) Resort Premiere Club. Through the auspices of the Ervin and Marie Wilkof Foundation, she and her husband made substantial contributions to the National First Ladies Library, Canton Museum of Art, Aultman Hospital volunteer Angels, McKinley Museum, Canton Symphony Orchestra Kinder Koncerts, Stark County Historical Society, the Canton Jewish Community Center, Canton Student Loan Foundation, Timken Mercy Service League, the Stark County Foundation, and the Stark Community Federation. Marie and Erv donated the Family Park at the Jewish Community Center and a park at Temple Emanu-El in SC. Their generosity extended to the Canton Museum of Art Courtyard and the Morning Breeze sculpture by Jerry Peart. They also donated The Marie and Ervin Wilkof Towers at Walsh University. Mrs. Wilkof is survived by her children, Jo Anne Ensley of Doylestown, PA, Ronald Shawn Wilkof of Canton and his wife Ruthanne, and Vicki Lynn Shinoda of Malvern, PA; by her grandchildren, Scott Ensley and Jennifer Ensley Lowe, Tyler and Brittany Wilkof, and Patrick and Kathryn Shinoda; and nine great-grandchildren. Calling hours are Sunday, December 6th from 5:00 – 7:00pm at Arnold Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Monday, December 7th, 11:00am at Temple Israel with Rabbi Jon Adland officiating. Final resting place is North Lawn Cemetery. A meal of consolation will follow at Temple Israel.
