Obituary

Margaret B. Shipley, MD, age 92 of North Canton, passed away Wednesday morning, November 14, 2007 in Aultman Hospital. She was born September 11, 1915 in Lynn, Massachusetts to Leroy and Nellie Stringfellow. Margaret received her B.A. degree in Zoology from Ohio Wesleyan University and her M.D. from the University of Rochester. She was the first female intern at Massachusetts General Hospital. Margaret was a member of Church of the Savior United Methodist Church. After raising her family she received training in Pediatrics at Cleveland Metro Health Hospital in the early 1970's. In 1971 she founded the Well Baby Clinic in Canton and worked extensively with the nurses training program at Aultman Hospital. She received the Presidents Award from the Junior League of Canton in 1975. In 1999 the Soroptimist International presented her an award for Women Helping Women and she was recognized by the 125th General Assembley of Ohio for being named a Stark County Wall of Fame Citizen of Honor on May 17, 2003. The Canton Welfare Federation and the United Way of Central Stark County presented her the Certificate of Recognition in 1979 in appreciation for her dedicated service to our children and her leadership in the development of the Well Baby Clinic and renamed it in her honor "The Margaret B. Shipley Community Center". Dr. Shipley was also a private pilot and member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years Thomas B. Shipley, M.D. whom she met while in Medical School. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas B. Jr. and Debbie Shipley of Lansing, Michigan, James Shipley of Akron, Ralph and Mary Shipley of Cincinnati, Ohio; grandchildren, Kristen (Scott) Dawson of Cincinnati, Barbara (Pat) Groom of DeWitt, Michigan; great grandchildren, Olivia, Sophia, Christopher Dawson, Sam and Claire Groom of DeWitt and long time close family friend and caregiver, Nancy McKenna. A Memorial service will be held Saturday 1:00 p.m. in Church of the Savior United Methodist with Rev George Roberts officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Margaret B.
