Obituary

Madelyn S. Gratop, age 94, the only child of Norman L. and Evangeline (Wagener) Schneider died February 24, 2022, at Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital after a short illness.  She was born in Cleveland Ohio December 8, 1927.  She was also the great granddaughter of Leonhardt and Eva Marie Schneider and granddaughter of Leonard and Elizabeth (Janson) Schneider, all of Canton.

A graduate of Ohio University she spent most of her adult life in Toledo, Ohio. She was a sister in Alpha Delta Pi.   During those years, she became President of the Junior Chamber Auxiliary, Girl Scout leader, Vice President of Parents Without Partners and was active in soroptimists.  Later she earned a Master's in Library and Information Sciences from the University of Toledo. In the 1980s she owned a Uniglobe Travel Agency.  Not content with those activities, she volunteered with the Toledo Rep Theater, Village Players, the Peristyle and the Toledo Symphony.

After moving to Canton in 1995, she worked at the Canton Museum of Art as well as the Board of Elections where she travelled the county taking absentee ballots to nursing home residents.  She joined Temple Israel and was active in Sisterhood and Stollen Moments.

She is survived by daughters Constance Lewis of Charleston WV, Kathryn (Will Vollert) of Reno NV, and Karen (John Anthony) Smith.  She also has three grandsons Brian Lewis (Kirsten) of Ardmore PA, Stephen Gratop and Richard Gratop both of Toledo Oh.  Her great grandchildren are Lorelei, Amelie and Finnegan all of Ardmore PA.

She enjoyed murder mysteries, gardening, and walking in Stadium Park.  She never stopped learning and remained curious to the end of her long life.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, March 6, 2022,1:00 p.m. at Temple Israel with Rabbi David Komerofsky officiating. Services may be viewed online at www.templeisraelcanton.org/gratop
