IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Louis William
Glew
September 14, 1928 – November 28, 2018
Louis William Glew, known by many friends as Stick or Sticky, Lou or Bill, passed away in his home on November 28, 2018 at the age of 90. He was born in Canton, Ohio to William T. Glew and Joyce Young Glew on September 14, 1928 and lived his entire life in the Canton area.
Lou attended Dueber Grade School and Lincoln High School, graduating in 1946. He then attended the Ohio State University, studying pre-law, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. During high school and college, he worked for Standard Unit Parts Corporation, until he was drafted in 1950 during the Korean War. After basic training and leadership school at Fort Knox, Kentucky, he was sent to Europe where he joined the Alien Enlistment program. The program involved recruiting foreign nationals from behind Iron Curtain countries to serve in the U.S. Army for five years, after which they would be eligible to become United States citizens.
Upon his return to civilian life, he attended William McKinley School of Law, graduating in 1957 from Akron Law School (now University of Akron). He was admitted to the Bar the same year and began working as a Legal Staff Analyst at Hercules Engine Corporation. In 1960 he joined the Timken Company in Industrial Engineering, before being promoted to the Labor Relations department, where he spent 11 years as Superintendent. He finished his career at the Timken Company as Director of Security, Fire and Safety and Industrial Hygiene, retiring in 1992 after 32 years of service. After retirement he continued to practice law until the year 2000.
During his career he also served for 20 years on the board of the J. Babe Stearn Community Center, after which he was elected into the Hall of Fame of the center in 2009. He was a member of the Fire Science Advisory Board for Stark State College of Technology, and he enjoyed many years as a member of the Toastmasters Club. He was treasurer of the Time Wasters Club, an organization formed to benefit disabled children. He was a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute for 20 years, the North Canton Elks club 2029, and the North Canton Eagles 2223. Throughout his life he worshipped as a member of Simpson United Methodist Church, where he served on various boards over the years.
In 1953 Lou met Mary Alisa Christensen, and upon first sight he declared to his buddies he would marry her. He did just that only three months later, and they loved one another for 61 years, until she passed away; his love for her will never end. They raised four children together.
Lou was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary, in 2014. Left to honor Lou are his son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Connie Glew, daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Brian Rollins, and daughters, Patricia Glew and Lisa Heaton. Lou will be missed by his eight grandchildren: Marisa (Josh) Boyd, Lauren (Jerry) Freismuth, Alexa Glew, Jessica Biddlestone, Bob Biddlestone, Andrew (Christy) DeHeaton, Mitchell Heaton, and Graham Heaton. In addition, Lou had two great-grandsons, Aidan Heaton and Alex DeHeaton. He is also survived by his only sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and John Weber, niece, Julie Weber, and nephew, Bill Weber, sister-in-law, Marian Christensen, nieces, Julie Herr, Jodie Hembree, Sondra Tompkins, and nephews, Brian Brakus and Rod Christensen. Also surviving Lou is his dear friend, Patty Jantho, with whom he attended high school. Patty and Lou spent much time together during his last years; it was a special relationship that brought both of them much joy.
