Obituary

Lillian (Lily) Podis, 91, of Canton, passed away July 7, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center. Lily was born in New York City on August 2, 1915 to Yetta and Isaac Robinowitz. The family moved to Canton in 1917. Lily was a 1933 graduate of McKinley High School prior to attending Canton Actual Business College. Prior to her marriage to George Podis on June 14, 1941 she worked as a legal secretary for several noted attorneys. She had also been a secretary at St. Haralambos Church for several years. Lily was a lifelong member of Shaaray Torah Synagogue and belonged to it's Sisterhood organization. Lily tutored Beginning Hebrew classes at Shaaray Torah where she also introduced and conducted Joys of Yiddish sessions. She had been a longtime member of Canton Jewish Community Center and it's Sr. Adult organization where she sat on the board for many years in addition to fulfilling her duties as Transportation Chairperson. Lily generously volunteered her time and services to the Welfare Fund Drives conducted by the CJCC. She was the person in charge of reservations for the Senior Lunches and Dinners program. Her Jewish Center activities included membership in The Zinger's Club, a group which sang and entertained residents in local nursing homes. She also was a member of the CJCC's Walker's Club. Lily was corresponding secretary for the Jewish War Veterans Auxiliary. She volunteered for the Canton Veterans Outpatient Clinic both in office services and as an escort. She was an A.A.R.P. member. Lily was predeceased by her husband George who died January 11, 2003; her parents; brothers Edward Robbins, Abe Robbins, Sam Robbins and Joseph Rabin. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Bonnie Podis of Canton, Leonard and JoAnne Podis of Shaker Heights; grandchildren Victor (JaDee) Podis and Jennifer (Ron) Podis-Wells all of Canton, Lauren Podis of Brooklyn, NY; and great-grandchildren, Daniel and Abigail Podis and Maggie Wells. Also surviving are a sister Florence Kletter of Deerfield Beach, FL; a brother Henry (Sadie) Robbins of San Diego, CA; and five nieces and nine nephews. Graveside services at the Canton Hebrew Cemetery will be conducted Tuesday July 10th at 11 AM with Cantor Bruce Braun officiating. The family will sit Shiva at the home of Gary and Bonnie Podis directly after services for the consolation meal and from 7 to 9 PM Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Memorial contributions may be made to Shaaray Torah Synagogue or Jewish Community Center. The family would like to express their appreciation for the superb care rendered our Mom, Grandma and Great-Grandma for the last 4 ½ years.
