Obituary

On Thursday, September 11, 2009, Lester Earl Miller was called home by our heavenly Father. He was born in Canton on March 24, 1921 to Earl and Elizabeth (Uftring) Miller. During the depression Les attended nine schools in the Canton Akron area and graduated from McKinley High School in 1939. He worked for Loew's Theater beginning as an usher, while in school and advanced to assistant manager positions in Akron, Columbus, Pittsburgh and San Francisco. In 1942 he entered the Army and achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant in charge of a tank platoon which fought in the S. Pacific. Les was wounded, awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals, and discharged in 1945. He graduated from Ohio University Athens, OH in 1949 with a B.F.A. degree and worked for Canton Art Service as Commercial Artist and Production Manager for over 34 years, retiring in 1985. Les generously, shared his talent; designing Habitat's original local logo and in numerous ways for his church and his friends. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by sister; Maxine, brother Jack, baby daughter Leslie, and step sons Steven & Michael Keck. Les leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife Lois of 41 years; brother Jim (Mary Lou) Miller and many loving extended family members including special niece, Suzy Permar of Memphis, TN. Funeral service will be Tuesday, September 15, 2009 11:00 A.M. in Zion United Church of Christ 415 S. Main St., North Canton, OH 44720. Interment will be in St. Jacob's Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday from 6 to 8 P.M. in the Spiker-Foster-Shriver Funeral Home 4817 Cleveland Ave., N.W. and one hour prior to the service in church on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Zion United Church of Christ.
