Obituary

Leon Albert, 90, passed away at his home in Naples, Florida January 23, 2011. Born and raised in Canton, Ohio, he returned to his hometown following his WWII service in the United States Army Air Corps to help run the family business, Albert Painting and Decorating. While supervising a project at Kent State University, he earned a Master's degree in education, which led him to obtain a teaching position at Stark State College and enabled him to follow his vocational dreams as an educator. He retired as dean of continuing education in 1990, providing more than 31 years of service and instituting many programs that continue to serve the educational and industrial training goals in the Stark County community. His parents, Anne and Louis Albert; his sister, Evelyn Fischer and his wife, Helene preceded him in death. He moved to Naples, Florida in 1999 but remained a true Buckeye and avid OSU fan. He graduated from Ohio State in 1942. He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Ruth. He leaves six children: Marcia and Bill Schonberg of Mansfield, OH and Naples, FL; Sharon and Charles Kamen from Denver; Roslyn Turner and Dean Davison, Seattle; Larry and Tracey Albert of Naples; Michael Albert in Dayton and Melinda and Syd Karp in Acton, MA, all of whom deeply miss him. His 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren are greatly saddened by his passing, but he left them a rich legacy of happy memories and high ideals. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity, Temple Israel in Canton, Temple Shalom in Naples and numerous other civic and Jewish organizations. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Helene and Leon Albert Scholarship Endowment at Stark State College, 6200 Frank Avenue North, North Canton, OH 44720. Services will be held at Arnold Funeral Home, 1517 Market Avenue North, on Friday, January 28 at 1 p.m. with Rabbi John Spitzer officiating. Internment follows at North Lawn Cemetery. The family may be visited at Glenmoor Country Club, 4191 Glenmoor Road N.W., in Canton on Friday evening between 6:30- 8:00 p.m. Rabbi Adam Miller will lead a service in Naples on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. at Ruth Albert's home.
