Laura Lee Norton, 93, passed away on Sunday January 4th 2015 while a resident at the Allay Senior Care center in Canton Ohio. She was the oldest of 5 children born on March 18, 1921 in Newton, Kansas to George Gustav and Lola Inez (Adams) Freeburg. During World War II, Laura served in the US Navy, Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) stationed at the US Naval Air Station in Ottumwa, Iowa. There she met and married Ens. G. D. (Ben) Norton. After the war, they moved to Grandville, Michigan, where she enjoyed a career with the Grandville Public School System. With her beautiful soprano voice Laura sang in the Bethel Lutheran Church chancel choir, was a featured soloist at community events and performed with the Grand Rapids Symphony Chorus. She was a long-time member of the East Grand Rapids Chapter of the Embroiderer's Guild of America. Laura is survived by her daughter, Linda (Thomas) Norton-Smith; son, Jacob (Brenda); grandchildren, Michael (Danielle), Kathryn, Jacob Rhy (Hayley), and great-grandson, Jacob Arlo. A private memorial service and internment will be in the Grandville Cemetery with full military honors.
