Obituary

Kay Luntz was born in Canton on August 3, 1934, a daughter of the depression era who went from humble beginnings to a life of accomplishments in her charitable works, education and raising a family.

At 5'2" she became the first female big base drummer in the Timken High School marching band and despite being barely being able to see over the drum she marched with gusto and played well for all to see. This type of strong will and determination would be the hallmark of her existence.

Graduating Timken in 1952 she soon married her high school sweetheart Don Hoffman and at her prodding they promptly moved to Los Angeles, Ca following in the footsteps of her suffragette great grandmother who trekked to Ca by train in the early 1900's. Kay later came back to Canton where she and Don had two children Steven and Philip. In 1965 Kay divorced Don and in 1966 she married Robert Luntz which lasted until he passed on February 12, 2015.

Her life with Robert started as and became an ongoing adventure; They eloped to Florida and thereafter Kay quickly learned to co-pilot his Cessna 210. She and Bob were weekend fixtures at McKinley Air Transport as Bob moved up from his 210 in 1966 to his 421 in 1982. Bob and Kay flew throughout the eastern US and beyond to expand and promote Luntz Iron and Steel Corporation. Kay and Robert became board members of the ECOPA and to commemorate their good works they have a joint memorial plaque at Akron Canton Airport that reads "Think Positive".

Kay's charitable work was guided by her mother-in-law, Fanny Luntz and as a result Kay soon became a fixture in the Canton Charity community becoming Chairwoman of the Canton Center Ball and serving on numerous charitable boards for years in her 40's and 50's.

Having an insatiable need for knowledge from 1992 to 1997 Kay attended Walsh University and at the age of 63 she graduated with a BA in History becoming the oldest Walsh university graduate at that time. Kay was an avid reader, kept up with current events and was able to use the latest technology in every era.

In her later life Kay became known for her love of schnauzers and her latest dog Bender (aptly named after Bob's favorite restaurant Benders in downtown Canton) went everywhere with her. She had daily social gatherings at Starbucks where current events and politics were debated and discussed. Kay drove through blizzards and tornado warnings to get her cinnamon dolce latte, extra hot with extra whipped cream and a pup cup for Bender.

To all who knew Kay, her feistiness and strong will did not fade with age and with the same grit and determination as she had as a little girl she looked at death, smiled and passed away on her own terms.

Kay Luntz (Chalfant) led her life her way to the end. Her zest for life and vitality will be missed by many.

Kay is survived by her brother Jim Chalfant, children Philip Hoffman and Steven Hoffman, Step Children, Thomas Luntz, John Luntz, Suzzanne Knecht (Luntz), Barbera Casey (Luntz) and numerous Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren.
