Obituary

Dr Kathryn J Beck, died peacefully March 17, 2008 at Chapel Hill Community in Canal Fulton Ohio where she had resided over 5 years. Born June 12, 1916 in Columbus Ohio to Rev Melvin E & Ruth F Beck, she lived as a child in Chicago before moving to North Canton in 1929 when her father became pastor of Zion Reformed Church (United Church of Christ). Valedictorian of her Heidelberg College class of 1937, she taught school at Canton Township High School and Kent State University, Canton Branch, before moving in 1950 to teach history at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Geneseo. She received her PhD in history from Western Reserve University in 1961, but focused on teaching. She was inducted into The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (education honorary), was recognized by SUNY as a Distinguished Service Professor, and the SUNY Geneseo history award is given in her name each year. Kathryn retired early in 1979, and in 1983 moved back to North Canton, where she wrote a short history of Zion UCC. Survived by her brother, Rev Robert F Beck (Elizabeth died June 2007), his children Barbara (Jonathan) Steingass of Medina, Richard (Marlene) of Uniontown, and Marguerite (Mark) Frey of Fairlawn, and their children and grandchildren, who fondly remember many week-long vacations hosted by "Aunt Katie" at Burr Oak State Park and elsewhere. Private burial at North Canton Cemetery. Memorial worship will begin 11 am Monday, March 24 at Zion United Church of Christ, 415 S Main St, North Canton, with Rev Eli O Klingensmith officiating, and a luncheon following. Greet family and friends after 10 am. Memorials may be directed to Zion UCC or to Chapel Hill Community. (Arnold, Hartville 330-877-9364) www.arnoldfuneralhome.com
