Obituary

On Monday, April 26, 2010, Katherine Allen Breckenridge, 92, went home to be with the Lord and join the many beloved friends and family who have been waiting for her. Born in DeKalb, MS on October 18, 1917 to Lemuel and Johnnie (Watkins) Allen, Katherine lived in Hartville, OH for over 70 years. She married the love of her life, Leonard (Tat) Breckenridge on December 3, 1939 and spent 52 years with him until his death in 1991. Katherine and Leonard had two children, Sandra Jean (Knowles) and Frank Allen. Katherine devoted her life to her family in both Ohio and Mississippi. She especially doted on her two grandchildren, Bryan and Anita Knowles. Katherine worked for the Stark County Board of Elections as a poll worker in Hartville for over twenty years. She was a life-long member of the Hartville United Church of Christ and a long-time member of the Hartville Sorosis Club. Katherine (Ma-ma) was also the honorary Breckenridge-Allen family historian, always willing to share stories of growing up in rural Mississippi, playing basketball at DeKalb High School, living through the Depression, moving to Ohio in 1941, and raising two kids during World War II. She will be remembered for her southern home cooking, prolific garden, abundance of canned fruits and vegetables every fall, spring crocuses and daffodils, summer lemonade, and cornbread stuffing at every Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Knowles of Hartville; grandson and his wife, Bryan and Rhonda Knowles of North Canton; granddaughter, Anita J. Knowles of San Diego, CA; sister-in-law and best friend, Cora B. McBrayer of Hartville; honorary nephew Don Houck of Marlboro; great-nephew Eric Houck of East Canton; eight great-grandchildren, Ethan, Chase, Madeline, Harris, Kayla, Michael, Elena and William; and honorary great-granddaughter Nicoale. In addition to her parents and her husband, Tat, Katherine was preceded in death by her son, Frank; brother, Leland Allen; brother-in-law, Elton "Mac" McBrayer; son-in-law, Keith Knowles; and niece, Shirley M. Houck. Calling hours will be Thursday 4-7 PM and one hour prior to services Friday 10-11 AM at Arnold Funeral Home. Funeral services are Friday 11 AM in the funeral home with Pastor David Lee of New Rumley United Methodist Church officiating. The family wishes to thank the staff at Altercare of Hartville for their kindness and patience. Special thanks to Lisa who was there when Katherine needed her.
