Obituary

Judge James R. Unger, age 89, of Canton died Sunday in the Canton Regency after a brief illness. Born in Tiffon, OH to the late Adolph and Ruth (Abbott) Unger. Jim was a graduate of Lehman High School, Ohio State University and the McKinley School of law. He was drafted in to the Army after the attack on Pearl Harbor and served from 1942 to 1945. After Jim returned from service he was a teller with the Harter Bank, and was in the claims adjusting business, while doing this he attended night school at McKinley School of Law. Jim went into private practice of law and was elected to the position of Stark County Prosecuting Attorney , while serving, he initiated the Victim Witness Program of Stark County. Jim then was elected to judge in the court of common pleas. Judge Unger was very active in Christ Presbyterian Church, having served as Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, Elder and Trustee. He loved swimming, and enjoyed summers at Severn Lodge in Canada with his family. Judge Unger was known for his fairness, his honesty and integrity as an attorney, Judge, and as a man. I addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Harry Unger, a son-in-law: John Johnston. Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years: Winifred McCollum Unger and his children James (Rachel) Unger, Peggy Johnston, and Mary Lou (Charles ) Reiman. Grandchildren: Jeffrey & Benjamin Unger, Mark (Alice) Johnston, Mike Johnston, Jeff (Lani) Johnston, Amy (Nathan) Sikora, Matthew (Janna) Ernst , and Daniel Reiman. Great grandchildren: Luke Johnston, Anna & Nathan Sikora, and Madeleine Ernst. Numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be 12 Noon Wednesday in Christ Presbyterian Church with Rev. David deVries and Rev. Wendy Bausman officiating. Interment will be in North Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday from 10:00 A.M. to 11:45 A.M. in the church parlor. The family would like to extend their thanks to the Canton Regency and Aultman Hospice for their care and support.
