Joseph A. Sturrett, age 95, a beloved friend of Stark County passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, October 21, 2009. One of seven children born to the late Michael and Teresa (Lanza) Sturrett he lived here his entire life. A 1932 graduate of McKinley High School, he received a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Ohio University, he was a star athlete in both high school and college and was an avid golfer throughout his life. A WW II Veteran, Lieutenant U.S. Naval Engineers, 1st Marine Div. S.W. Pacific; 19th Seabee Battalion. Public Works Officer 14th Naval District, Pearl Harbor. After serving in private practice for 10 years as a consulting engineer he was elected Stark County Engineer in 1962, serving 25 years in office. His professional affiliations included: Member of National & Ohio Society of Professional Engineers, Canton Chamber of Commerce Highway Committee, past president N.E. Ohio Assoc. of County Engineers, and was former director of Stark County Civil Defense. Mr. Sturrett was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years Lucien Sturrett who died on September 20, 2009. Survivors include two daughters: Mrs. Barry (Heidi) Motzkin of Woodstock, NY and Mrs. Russell (Jodi) Riley of Maui, Hawaii. Two grandchildren: Lauren and Joseph Motzkin. According to his wishes a private graveside service will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions in memory of Joseph and Lucien Sturrett may be made to Aultman Hospice 2821 Woodlawn Ave., N.W.
