Obituary

Jolene Swallow, age (21 and some months) of Hartville, passed away Friday evening, January 6, 2017 in Aultman Hospital after a life long battle with the complications of Multiple Sclerosis. She was born August 2, 1929 in Cambridge, Ohio to Foster and Charlotte (McElwee) Secrest, whom she loved very much.

Jolene graduated early from Lincoln High School and was an operator for Ohio Bell until being swept off her feet by a handsome man by the name of George Norman. Although a highly intelligent woman with many gifts, Jolene chose to stop working, stay home and be a loving, supportive mother.

She was a member of the Congress Lake Club and the Congress Lake Garden Club.

She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, wife and friend, forgiving, generous and kind to a fault. Despite her disabling illness, her smile brightened every room as she was always full of gratitude to others for their help and was supportive in every way to her husband who was deeply involved in community service. Their love story which began at Arthur Murray dance studio, survived two wars, the building of a real estate business, three children, several grandchildren and a landslide of major illnesses. Family success stemmed from her position as the loving anchor of her family.

Her husband of 58 years, George, passed away in 2009.

Only months before, they were seen holding hands watching Lawrence Welk, their favorite weekend show. She is survived by a daughter, Kristen L. Swallow of Columbus; sons, Dr. Ward K. Swallow of Henderson, Nevada, Creighton W. Swallow of Hartville; brother, Dr. Scott (Judy) Secrest of Indiana; granddaughters Lanni Deskins, and Allye Deskins. Adopted family members Lynette and Joe Ritzert of North Canton, and Bertie Simmons of Hartville.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be Saturday January 14, 2017, 10:30 a.m. in Faith Community Church, 4301 Cleveland Ave NW, Canton with Rev. Eldon Smith officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to the House of Loreto.
