Obituary

John Avert Rapport, age 92, born on April 6, 1918, in Pittsburgh, PA, passed away on Monday, Feb. 7, 2011. He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip Ginsberg, who died when he was a toddler, and Ida Rapport. He is survived by his wife Naomi and four children and their spouses: Philip, M.D. (Rebecca, Ph.D.), Judith Bergman (Henry), Kenneth, J.D. (Barbara Messinger Rapport, M.D.) and Daniel, M.D. (Judith A. Leb, J.D.). He was also the proud grandparent of five grandsons: Aaron, Ph.D. (Joyce), David, Adam, Nathan and Jacob. John was a longtime Canton business owner who operated seven women's apparel stores in the city and surrounding area. He was a member and former president of the Downtown Canton Business Association and served as a board member of Park and Shop and of the Stark County Hunger Task Force. He was a dedicated volunteer at Mercy Medical Center, having donated over 1200 hours of service to the hospital after he retired. He also enjoyed being a member of the Retired Executive Club and the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club. John was a member of Temple Israel where he served as treasurer, board member and president of the Temple Men's Club. John graduated with a B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1940, and anticipating the war, he signed up for the U.S. Army on Dec.1, 1941, a week before the attack on Pearl Harbor. By the time he was discharged in March, 1946, John was a field artillery Captain having served in the United States and France in various capacities. Members of Arrowhead Country Club for 48 years, John and his wife Naomi loved to play golf and tennis with their many friends and family. They spent their winters in Boca Raton, Florida for many years after retirement, so they were able to enjoy golf year round. They also travelled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, Israel, and the U.S. and took great pleasure in visiting their children and grandchildren in Ohio, Illinois and Minnesota. John was a lifelong reader and avid sports fan who kept up on what was happening in sports through some favorite Internet sites and in the business world by pouring over the Wall Street Journal daily. Funeral services will be at the Arnold Funeral Home at 1517 North Market Ave., Canton, OH at 1pm on Thursday, February 10, 2011, with Rabbi Leah Herz and Rabbi John Spitzer officiating, to be followed by a shiva meal at Temple Israel now located in the former Jewish Community Center on Harvard Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Temple Israel in Canton, the Stark County Hunger Task Force or to the Cleveland Clinic Geriatrics Research and Education Fund.
