John R. Cromb Jr., much loved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, age 90, passed away Thursday evening, December 6, 2007 at Aultman Hospital following complications after a massive heart attack. Born July 9, 1917 in Fargo, North Dakota to the late Barbara Sawyer and John R. Cromb, DDS. He graduated from NDSU in 1939 with a BS in chemistry. He was employed as chief chemist for Marietta Paint and Color Company, Marietta, Ohio for 7 years. John was a resident of North Canton since 1951 when he was hired as Technical Director for Harrison Paint Corporation, Canton. He was promoted to Vice President of Operations and retired from Harrison Paint Corporation in 1984 after 33 years of service. John was called to active duty as Lt. (ROTC) in the US Army, attached to the Air Force in 1941, retiring in 1946 as Major. He served 32 months in the Caribbean Theater and then 24 months in the Pacific Theater, WW II. He was among those landing at Atsugi Airdrome, Tokyo, with the 5th Air Force four days before peace was declared. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by infant son Douglas Maitland Cromb. Survived by his wife Dorothy Murphy Cromb to whom he had been married 64 years; daughters Katherine married to Donald Batrus of Johnstown, PA, Amy married to John F. Olson of St. Cloud, MN, Janet married to Ted Bailey of Columbus, OH and son John R. Cromb III married to Vicki Howse of Houston, TX. There are six grandchildren, Carey Batrus Weaver, Lori Batrus Cable, Jesse and Alexander Bailey, John R. IV and Katherine Cromb. Four great-grandchildren, William (Liam), Alexandra (Ali), and Annalise Weaver and Jacob Cable. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Jean Murphy married to Joseph Aneda of Newark, Delaware, and Rose Marie Murphy of Falling Waters, West Virginia and numerous nieces and nephews. John was a long standing member of St. Mark Episcopal Church, Canton, where he served on the Vestry, as Lay Reader, Junior Warden, Senior Warden and Trustee. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 22, 2007 at St. Mark Episcopal Church at 2:00 PM officiated by the Rev. Dr. Carey E. Sloan III. There will be no calling hours but friends will be received after the services. His cremains will be entombed in St. Mark's Columbarium.
