IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John
Buchman
March 5, 1922 – April 13, 2008
John Frederick Buchman III, a life-long resident of Canton, Ohio, died early Sunday, April 13, 2008. He was born on March 5, 1922. He graduated from Lehman High School in 1940, and from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island in 1943. During World War II, he served as a Navy lieutenant in the U.S. Navy on the destroyer USS Ericksson, which participated in the Allied invasion of Italy in 1943, escorting transport ships in the Atlantic and Mediterranean during World War II, and was involved in the sinking of one of the last German U-boats off the coast of Rhode Island at the end of the war. Following the war, he attended Michigan Law School, where he received his LL.B. degree at the University of Michigan in 1948. He started his legal career in Detroit but soon thereafter returned to Canton. He spent the next roughly 45 years as an attorney with the Day, Ketterer, Raley, Wright and Rybolt law firm in Canton, working on a wide range of labor relations, anti-trust, taxation, general corporate and litigation matters for clients including The Timken Company and The Ohio Power Company. Among the matters Mr. Buchman worked on during his career was a precedent-setting anti-trust case brought by the Justice Department against The Timken Company that was decided by the United States Supreme Court in 1951. In his youth Mr. Buchman was a member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church. He and his family were early members of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and most recently were members of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Massillon. He and his wife Anne Dougherty Buchman, a Canton native whom he met while at college, were married at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on September 4, 1948. Over the years, he served on the Vestries at St. Paul's, St. Mark's and St. Timothy's Episcopal Churches. He served as President of the Canton Chamber of Commerce and the Stark County Bar Association, and was instrumental in the formation of the Stark Community Foundation, an organization dedicated to promoting the betterment of Stark County, and in the development of the Newmarket Project and the McKinley Grand Hotel. He was a member of the Glenmoor Country Club and the Canton Club and a longtime member of Brookside Country Club, where he was the singles tennis champion from 1954 to 1967. In his later years he was a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer. He was well known for his love of his family, music and for his frequent Letters to the Editor that were published in the Canton Repository, in which he shared his insights on current events. He loved a good pun and enjoyed writing lyrics to musical events at his high school reunions. In his retirement he enjoyed traveling with his wife, and devoted many hours to working in his yard. He was preceded in death by his parents, John F., Jr. and Velma, and his sister Martha Brundige. In addition to his wife Anne, he is survived by his four children: Elizabeth Weeks of The Bronx, NY, John A. Buchman of Bethesda, MD, Heather Buchman of Clinton, NY, and William Buchman of Chicago, IL; six grandchildren; and his sister, Jane Laird of Wilmington, DE. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 17 at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Massillon. His preferred charities were the Stark Community Foundation, St. Timothy's Episcopal Church and the Canton Symphony Orchestra. (Arnold-Canton 330-456-7291) www.arnoldfuneralhome.com
