Jerrold Leon Lockshin passed away July 2, 2009. Born in Youngstown, Ohio on January 30, 1928 to parents Nathan & Mary Lockshin, he was a graduate of Lehman High School, Class of 1946, and a graduate of The Ohio State University, BS 1950. After graduation, he entered the US Army, Korean War veteran, achieving the rank of 1st lieutenant, then Captain in the US Army Reserves. He joined the family business, Golden Age Distributing Company (later Fame Beverage Co.), with his brother and father. In addition, he and his brother started A-1 Truck Service and then Ohio Bus Sales, where he worked until retirement in 1999. Most near and dear to his heart was his family, especially his six grandchildren. Jerrold was active in a wide range of Jewish and civic organizations. Starting as a Boy Scout 70 years ago, he became active as an adult volunteer in local, regional and national scouting. He was president of Buckeye Council, vice-president of Area 5 Central Region, and chairman of the National Jewish Committee on Scouting. He was the recipient of numerous awards including the Silver Beaver, Silver Antelope and the highest volunteer award in scouting, the Silver Buffalo. Jerrold was awarded Vigil Honor, Order of the Arrow and 5th Year Pipestone. He was proud his sons are Eagle scouts, and that his wife, daughter and son, Tom, received the Shofar Award for Jewish scouting. Jerrold was a lifelong supporter of the Buckeyes. He attended OSU football games for over 50 years. He was a member and active alumnus of Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. Jerrold was a member of Shaaray Torah Synagogue for 70 years, where he served as president of the board and president of the Men's Club. Some of his many honors include: Canton Jaycees Distinguished Service Award; City of Hope Spirit of Life Award; State of Israel David Ben Gurion Award; Israel Freedom Award; Revella Kopstein Award of the Canton Jewish Community Federation; Distinguished Service Award, Shaaray Torah Congregation; Chapel of the Four Chaplains Humanitarian Award. Jerrold served as president of the following civic organizations: Canton Jaycees, where he also served as a state, national and international Officer, and was a JCI Senator. Stark County Mental Health Association, Canton Urban League, Canton Chapter City of Hope, Stark County Mental Health & Retardation Board, Stark County and State of Ohio Mental Health Federation. Jerrold was a 55 year member of McKinley Lodge #431 F&AM Scottish Rite Valley of Canton; Al Koran Temple Shrine; board of trustees of the Coleman Outreach Center; and a Life Member of NAACP. He served on the original board of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Jerrold is survived by his wife of 58 years, Phyllis, children Larry (Janet Henrie), Thomas (Beth), and Cathy (Mark) Baer; grandchildren Hannah & Nathaniel, Zara & Benjamin, and Daniel & Andrea; brother James and sister-in-law Shirley. Funeral services at 1:00 pm Sunday, July 5 at Shaaray Torah Synagogue with Cantor Bruce Braun officiating, followed by burial at the Canton Hebrew Cemetery.
