Jean F. Lachman, 87, died April 30, 2007, in Wadsworth, Ohio. Jean was born to Cyrinthia Jones and Grover Washington Clayton in Sullivan, Indiana, on November 2, 1919. She was the valedictorian of her graduating class at Carlisle High School, and attended Hanover College where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a double major in Latin/Classics and Physical Education in 1941. While at Hanover she participated in women's track and field, and tennis. Jean received a Master's Degree in Physical Education from Iowa State University and then joined the faculty of the University of Akron, teaching physical education, Latin, and Greek. Jean played the violin with the University of Akron Symphony. In July 1946 she married Bernard D. Ferguson and began teaching at Old Trail School. Mr. Ferguson died in 1953 and Jean moved to Suffield. Jean was introduced to her second husband, William Frederick ("Bill") Lachman, in 1954 by a mutual friend. They were married on July 3, 1955 and Jean relinquished her teaching career to raise her children. When her husband retired she returned to teaching at Suffield Elementary School. Bill died on January 24, 1994. Jean was a member of the Suffield United Church of Christ, Field Retired Teachers organization, Hartville Seniors and Lake Seniors Associations. She served as the President of the Lake Seniors. She competed in the Senior Olympics from 1995-1997. She loved to travel, play cards, and see new things. Preceded in death by her sister Lucy Clayton Doswell (on April 26, 2007), she is survived by children, William E. Lachman of Suffield, Ohio, Mary F. Lachman (Dominick A. Scaramuzzino) of Bethany, Connecticut, stepsons Larry D. Lachman (Delores) of Lothman, Florida, Ed (Terri) Lachman of St. Petersburg, Florida, and William F. (Alice) Lachman Jr., of Gainesville, Florida; grandchildren, Michael and James Scaramuzzino, Christine A. (Michael) Urig, Eddie (Angela) Lachman, Julie Lachman and Michael (Christy) Lachman. The family would like to thank Jean's niece, Karen Baer Ruckel for her love and warm dedication to Jean during these final years. Friends may call at Arnold Funeral Home, 504 W. Maple Street, Hartville, on Friday, May 4th between 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Suffield United Church of Christ (UCC) on Saturday, May 5th at 11 a.m. with Pastor Earl F. Roberts officiating. Calling hours Saturday are 10-11 a.m. in the church. Interment will be at Mount Peace Cemetery, Hartville, OH.
