Janis Margaret (DeMuth) Snyder, a longtime resident of North Canton was born in 1918 to Walter and Vera DeMuth in Fairview Park. She attended West Dennison and Garnet Elementary schools and graduated from Fairview High School as Salutatorian. After graduation she worked for Postal Telegraph, and then became a secretary at Fairview High School. In the evenings she attended Cleveland College on a Richmond Grant. She earned her degree over the course of 15 years and graduated Summa cum Laude in 1956. After receiving her degree, she was appointed assistant to the superintendent, Mr. Lewis Mayer, a Cleveland area educator who was a mentor and friend to her as she built her career. Upon Mr. Mayer's retirement, she became a full time English teacher and also ran the Reading Center. Janis chose a rewarding career in education at a time when many women didn't have higher education or careers available to them. With her husband, Ken, she owned and operated a Ben Franklin store in Canton. She continued her education career and taught classes at Malone College. She was a talented ballroom dancer, an impeccable dresser, and had a keen eye for design. Janis was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Ruth Olive (Lloyd) Leeseberg; husband, Kenneth, and stepson, Kenneth (Cindy). She is survived by her companion of 25 years, Gene Popa; brother, Robert (Janice) DeMuth; nieces, Barbara (Joseph) Marconi, Kim (Robert) Kustis, Maryann (David) Clemens; nephew, Jeff (Franca) DeMuth and stepson, Ray (Carol) Snyder. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday in Christ Presbyterian Church 530 Tuscarawas St. W., Canton, Ohio 44702 with Rev. David L. de Vries officiating.
