Obituary

Janet I. "Peg" Ziegler, age 93, of Hartville, died unexpectedly on Tuesday morning June 9, 2009. Mom was born in Providence Township, Lucas County, Ohio on January 17, 1916 to the late Stephen Asbury and Elsie Adele (Ryan) Thomas, graduated from Grand Rapids Ohio High School in 1934 where she excelled as a student and was a member of the girl's basketball team. With the financial help of her older sister Helen, she graduated from Maumee Valley Nursing School. She worked at Lucas Co. Hospital as the Head Nurse of the operating room. During this time she met her future husband Chief Resident Harold C. Ziegler. In 1942 she sailed to Honolulu under the auspices of the Office of Civil Defense to work as a nurse at Ft. Shafter during WW II. There she reunited with and married Dr. Harold "Babe" Ziegler on January 16, 1943. In 1946, mom and dad decided to make their family home in Hartville, Ohio where Dr. Ziegler established his medical practice. During her decades in Hartville she was an advisor to the Future Nurses of America at Lake High School, a Girl Scout Volunteer, an active member of the Hartville Garden Club, Sorosis and Friends of the Hartville Branch of Stark County Library, as well as a member of Congress Lake County Club and The Wilderness Center. Mom was an excellent bridge player, enjoyed gardening and liked to look her best, which included spectacular high heels. Preceded in death by her husband Dr. Harold on June 25, 1980; grandson Raymond Robinson; son-in-law Ross Phillips; brothers William Leroy, Gerald, George, J. Benjamin, John and Heber Thomas; and sisters W. Helen Thomas, J. Marie Vollmar and Geneva Vollmar. She is survived by her daughters Joyce Robinson of Cleveland Heights, Judith Phillips of Alliance, Linda Ziegler of East Liverpool and C. Jane Ziegler of Hartville; grandchildren Todd (Amy) Robinson, Seth Robinson, Kevin (Julie) Phillips, Megan (Luc) Smitley-Russell, Matthew Smitley; great-grandchildren Rhiannon, Connor and Liam Phillips; sister Kathleen Adele "Aunt Bunt" Vollmar; and numerous nieces and nephews. Calling hours are Friday 10:30- 11:30 AM in the Arnold Funeral Home, Hartville and funeral services begin in the funeral home Friday 11:30 AM with Rev. Jonathon Truax officiating. Final resting place is Mount Peace Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Village of Hartville, for the Hartville Memorial Park, 202 W.
