Obituary

Lifelong Canton resident Janet McKown King passed away on Monday, December 27. Her health, which had been failing for some time, took a sudden downturn before Christmas, but the end was peaceful. She was the only child of Herbert and Miriam McKown and grew up on 19th Street, making many of the friends she held dear for the rest of her life. She graduated in 1941 from Lehman High School, where she met William Davies King. A year later Bill transferred to Denison University to be with her, and they were married in 1943 at Camp Pendleton, California. They briefly lived in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was completing his medical education in the Army. A daughter Cyndy was born a year later. When they returned to Canton, they had three sons. She and Bill resided in the same Avondale house where they raised their family. They were married for 67 years. Jan and Bill were among the founding members of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in 1955, and Jan always took a keen interest in the teachings of the church. She was a lover of wonderful books, challenging games, and good conversation. She was a devoted wife, an attentive mother, and a loyal friend, with a strongly intuitive and empathetic sensibility. She brought an understated wisdom to her family and friends. She is survived by her loving husband Bill, daughter Cynthia McKown King, son Professor William Davies King of Santa Barbara (wife, Wendy Lukomski, and daughters Ruth Fraden King and Eva Roslynn King), son Dr. Andrew James King of Rancho Santa Fe (wife Dianne McKay, sons Liam Barry King and Daniel Murdoch King, and daughter Nora Mary King), and son Dr. Peter Herbruck King (wife Pamela Myers, and daughters Janet Eleanor King and Helen Blair King, and son Nathaniel Andrew King). We will all miss the pleasure of her company, her great laugh, and the way she held the history of Canton, her family, and her world in respect. Services will be Wednesday 10:00 a.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church with Rev. Paul Gaston officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 515 48th St NW, Canton, Ohio 44709. (Arnold-Canton 330-456-7291) www.arnoldfuneralhome.com
