Jane K.
Braster
September 16, 1923 – June 15, 2014
Jane K. Braster, age 90, of Canton, passed away on Sunday night, June 15, 2014 in Bethany Nursing Home. She was born September 16, 1923 in Canton to Evan Chester and Vesta (Plotner) Coldren. Jane was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years William A. Braster in 2008; she is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Kathleen and Thomas Clingan of Chatham, NJ; grandchildren John William (Caroline) Clingan of London, United Kingdom and Julia Clingan of New York, NY; sister-in-law Dorothy (George) Johnson of Long Island, NY; and cousins Frances (Eugene) Stentz of North Canton, Susan (Charles) Griffin of Orchard Park, NY and Michael Plotner of Buffalo, NY. Jane had a lifelong engagement with the arts, especially music. As a college student in the 1940's, she received a scholarship to study voice at Chautauqua where she sang with the Chautauqua Opera Company during the summer season. After college, her studies continued at the Julliard School in New York where she was a soloist at churches and temples and appeared in various choral productions. Locally, she performed with the Canton Civic Opera, the Canton Players' Guild, and at Lakeside. She served on the Youngstown Symphony Board, and chaired a major annual fundraising event. A member of the MacDowell Music Club in Canton, she performed regularly and served as its President, helping to raise scholarship funds for local music students. She was a docent at the Canton Museum of Art and enjoyed guiding local students through exhibits and the museum's permanent collection. She was also a member of the Aultman Hospital Women's Board and volunteered at Malone University. A devoted mother, she could be counted on to boost spirits, support the PTA, volunteer as a Girl Scout leader, or chaperone a field trip. Her interests included tennis, travel, and collecting antiques. She loved entertaining; she and her husband Bill gathered friends together for impromptu dinners and picnics at their home. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, July 12, 10:00 am at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Canton, where Jane had been a member for 37 years. The Rev. Paul Gaston will officiate. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Jane's memory to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, The Canton Symphony, The Canton Museum of Art, Aultman Hospice Care or Malone University
