For Canton Repository James "Douglas" Sproul, age 83, of Dade City, Florida, passed away comfortably in his home on Wednesday, August 12, 2015. He was born February 15, 1932 in Defiance, Ohio to the late Shirley Douglas and Sarah Faye (Bodenbender) Sproul. He was a Korean War Army Veteran and was a Psychologist with the Canton City Schools, retiring in 1989. In Ohio, memberships include Christ Presbyterian Church, Trinity Lodge # 710 F & AM, American Legion Post #44, American Legion Toast Masters, Ohio Retired Teachers Association. Doug was also a frequent visitor at John Knox Presbyterian Church, and also enjoyed time as a counselor at Camp Wakonda in Leesville, Ohio. While living in Florida, Doug Sproul stayed active in his community at the Blue Jay Mobile Home Park, and kept membership in First Presbyterian Church, in Dade City, Florida where he served as a Deacon and Elder. He is survived by his children, Kerrill Sue (Dan) Findley of Moline, IL, Julie Kay Sproul of Canton, Ohio, Scott Douglas Sproul of Louisville, Ohio Laurie Ann (Dave) Nelson of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren Joshua Aaron (Darcy) Findley and Stephen Daniel Findley, Trevor Wesley (Jodi) Sproul, Dawn Ashley Franco and Elizabeth Andrea Avila(Nelson); great-grandchildren Aaron James Franco, Caitlyn Jeanne Sproul, and Addisyn Kay Findley; and by his godchildren, James McKelvey, Sutherland McKelvey and Kenzie Grace McKelvey, children of long-time family-friends, James and Tracy McKelvey. Doug is also survived by his sisters, Delores Ann (Robert) Zimmerman and their family, and Patricia Lee Lamparelli and her family, and his former wife, Sharon Ann Porter, mother of his children. A Memorial service will be held on Thursday 4:00 PM, August 20, 2015 at Christ Presbyterian Church, 530 Tuscarawas Street West, Canton, Ohio, with Rev. David de Vries officiating. A graveside service will be held Saturday 11:00 AM August 22, 2015 at Riverview Memory Gardens, Rt. 424E, in Defiance, Ohio with Military Honors. Additionally, a Memorial service is scheduled for Saturday 1:00 PM August 29, 2015 for Florida relatives and friends at First Presbyterian Church, 37412 Church Avenue, Dade City, Florida 33525 at 1:00 PM with Pastor Kevin Morris officiating. An ice cream social will follow this service in celebration of Doug's love for ice cream.
