Obituary

James T. Harrington, age 90, passed away Sunday, February 26th in Green Meadows Nursing Home. Jim was born December 2, 1921 in Detroit. He was the son of Harold and Edith Harrington. He was a graduate of Albion College and taught math at Wayne State University. During World War II, Jim served in the U.S. Navy as the chief engineer aboard a troop transport ship. He came to Canton in the 50's to work as advertising manager of the E.W. Bliss Company. When Gulf & Western bought Bliss, Jim was transferred to the Grand Rapids, MI office. He returned to Canton a few years later becoming the advertising and public relations manager of Central Trust Bank. In that past, he was responsible for the creation of the large Central Trust Owl inflatable figure that toured the bank's area branches promoting use of ATM machines and nighttime banking. Jim was very active in community life serving as a member and past president of the Canton Chamber of Commerce 1959-60 and Canton Rotary 1986-87 and working with the Salvation Army, serving as advisory board chairman in 1968. He served as chairman of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Festival in 1982, and was a member of the Canton Retired Executives Club. In 1979 he was named the Canton Advertising Federation's Ad Person of the Year. Jim enjoyed traveling and upon graduating from college he and his brother Dan motored across the U.S. He and wife Phyllis traveled multiple times with friends to various European destinations and the couple had great times camping with family at many U.S. sites. As a young man Jim enjoyed sailing his own Lightning sailboat at Atwood Lake. Another hobby was golfing and though he played less often in his later years, he was always able to have a respectable game. That, in part, was attributable to his calm, easy going manner and his always pleasant nature. He was a member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church until it closed in 2009. Since then he has been a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Shortly after his wife passed away in 2008 Jim became a resident of the Inn at Belden Village, where he will be remembered for his love of song. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, wife Phyllis, (Horn) and brother Dan. He is survived by daughters Amy (Anthony) Wise of North Canton and Diane Wehunt of Odessa, FL and son Robert T. (Virginia) Harrington of Cary, IL. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren: Julie (Nick) Vesely of Zanesfield, OH; Matthew, Natalie and Nicole Wise of North Canton; Derek, Daniel and Emily Wehunt Odessa, FL; Lisa (Josh) Nilsson of Pingree Grove, IL; Cindy (Tony) Sanor of Ft. Wright, KY and Katie Harrington of Cary, IL. Survivors also include two great grandchildren: Luke Vesely and Anya Nilsson. Other survivors are sister-in-law Betsy Harrington of Corvalis, OR and brother-in-law Wendell (Jill) Horn of North Canton. The family extends its heartfelt thanks to the staffs at the Inn at Belden Village and Green Meadows Nursing Home for the wonderful care they gave Jim.
