James (Jim) R. Espenschied, age 85, of North Canton, passed away Sunday morning May 1, 2011 at Aultman Hospital with his children by his side. He was born in Hartville, Ohio on April 17, 1926 to the late Virgil and Iva Mae (Cramer) Espenschied and graduated from Hartville High School. While attending Notre Dame University, Jim played the sousaphone in the marching band. He served in the Navy during WW II. After earning his master's degree from Baldwin Wallace College, he started his teaching career in Lima, taught at Hartville High School and retired from Kent State University. During retirement he was a chemistry and physics teacher and lecturer at Walsh University and Kent State. Over the years he enjoyed hobbies including photography and woodworking. He loved listening to classical music and was an avid walker. We all loved and will miss his sense of humor, smile and hugs. Preceded in death by his wife Anna in 1998; sisters Lois Meyer and Jayne Lehmann; and brother Theodore Espenschied. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Jean and Steve Trent of North Canton, son and daughter-in-law Kenneth and Regina Espenschied of Olmsted Township, OH; grandchildren Patricia Film, Maria (Matthew) Moore, Elizabeth and Elena Espenschied; great-grandson Mathias Moore; sister Alice Penton of Utah; his friend and companion Gladys (Inez) Preisse of North Canton; and other relatives including Aunt Dorothy Weiss of MA. Calling hours are Wednesday 5-8 PM at Arnold Funeral Home in Hartville and one hour prior to services Thursday 10-11 AM. Funeral services are Thursday 11 AM in the funeral home.
