IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James Paul
Connor
January 8, 1931 – March 5, 2010
James Paul Connor, Ph.D., 79, passed away on March 5th, 2010. He was a loving and devoted family man. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Irene (Renie) Connor, and his three children, Dr.Erin (Dr. Stephen) Mayfield , Jamie (Dr. Doug) Fairchild, James Paul Connor II and his wife Kassia. He has three grand children: Keane and Mycah Fairchild, James Connor III and many loving nieces and nephews. His three siblings are Patricia ( Marcelino "Babe") Sirgo, Ralph (Sue) Connor, and Robert (Shirley) Connor. He served in the Navy from 1948-1953, during the time of the Korean War. He had a deep passion for the military and spent his time on the USS Missouri, USS Leyte, and USS Albany. Additionally, he felt it a privilege to play trombone in the US Navy Admiral's Staff Band. After returning home, he was a local jazz pianist for 15 years and a lifelong member of the Musician's Union. While obtaining his Master's and then PhD in psychology, he taught in the Stark County Schools. He was Project Director for the Handicap Children of Stark County, and was the school psychologist for a number of different schools. In the late 60's, he held the position of Director of Clinical Training at the Marianne Frostig Center in Los Angeles. Jim returned to Canton in the early 70's to accept a psychology professorship at Kent State University Stark Campus, and to establish his private counseling practice. He taught at the university for 25 years, and retired from teaching in 1992. Dr. Connor loved his work. Illness forced him to retire from private practice in 2006, a decision that was very painful for him. Throughout his life, he was the first to acknowledge the love and support of his wife in his professional and academic achievements. He will be greatly missed. We love you, our Dad, Husband, Brother, and Uncle. Calling hours are on Tuesday, March 9 from 5-7pm at Arnold's Funeral Home, with a memorial service to follow at 7pm. There will be a private interment on Wednesday.
