Obituary

Jack L. Smith, age 78, of North Canton, passed away Thursday evening in Aultman Hospital. Jack was born in Canton to Thomas and Margaret (Cross) Smith. He was a co-owner of Smith-Steinberg Building Construction Company in Zoar, Ohio. Mr. Smith was a graduate of Lincoln High School and attended Kent State University. A dedicated member of North Canton Community Christian Church he was also a member of William H. Hoover Lodge #770 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Canton and Tadmor Shrine. Jack and his wife were active members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and were charter members under Homeland Security. His membership was Division 08, Flotilla 01 and he served as Vice Captain, Vice Commander and Commander of the Flotilla and was a Flotilla and Division Staff Officer. He also served as Officer of Public Affairs, Career Counseling and Marine Safety and Environmental Safety. He received the rating of Coxswain. Jack spent countless hours volunteering at MAPS Air Museum where he restored the Link Trainer, was crew chief restoring the C-47 Dakota and helped with the restoration of several other planes. He built the wooden steps visitors use to view the exhibits and worked in the gift shop. Mr. Smith also restored wooden boats to museum standards and was able to scratch build scale model planes and boats from pictures. Jack loved his family, home and country and was a man of faith who always followed the golden rule. He is survived by his wife Eileen, with whom he would have celebrated 50 years of marriage on October 26, 2006. He is also survived by a daughter, Melanie Michelle Goodwin and granddaughters, Nicole and Jacqueline Goodwin all of Orange, Ct.; brother, William Ray Smith; sister-in-law Missy Keck; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Leon (Bud) and Betty Burfield and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sister-in-law, Emily Smith, brother, Alan Smith and brother-in-law Dr. Homer I. Keck. Funeral services will be Monday 1:00 p.m. at the Arnold Funeral Home in Canton with Pastor Donald Baird officiating. Interment will be in North Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday (TODAY) 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. A Masonic funeral service will be Sunday 6:45 p.m. The family will receive friends following the funeral in the community room at North Canton Community Christian Church for a time of fellowship.
