Jack C. Hannan, age 87, passed away Sunday night July 19, 2009 in the Laurels of Massillon. He was born October 5, 1921 in Mansfield to Ernest and Lillian (Oswalt) Hannan. Jack graduated from Ontario High School and attended Ohio University where he was on the swim team. During WW II Mr. Hannan served in the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer on the USS Thomas McKean which was sunk by the German Submarine U-505. He was one of only 17 survivors and spent 9 days in a lifeboat and received a Purple Heart. U-505 is in the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Paula Rose (Sala) Hannan, a sister, a brother and two grandsons. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Gail Jurgens of Medina, Gwen and Riley Gerber of Canton, Rita and Bruce Sigler of Chattanooga, Tennessee; sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Deborah Hannan of North Canton, Kimm and Sandy Hannan of Massillon; 11 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. A private family memorial service will be held at the Arnold Funeral Home in Canton with Pastor M. Dana Gammill officiating. A graveside service with Military Honors will be in the Chattanooga, Tennessee National Cemetery on Friday at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 7020 AC Skinner Parkway, Suite 100, Jacksonville, Florida 32256, or the Ryan C.
