Jack Fisher, age 92 of Canton, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2019, in his residence with his loving family by his side. He was born July 27, 1926 in Santa Monica, California to Joseph and Rose.
Jack Fisher was a proud 1944 graduate of Lehman High School where he designed the yearbook cover and was a National Honor Society member. He served in the United States Navy from 1944-1946, then attended Kent State University. He entered the family grocery business in 1948. In 1952, Jack Fisher, his brother Herbert, and their father Joe, opened the first Fishers Foods supermarket. He would later serve as President and CEO.
Jack Fisher was a member of Temple Israel and generously donated his time and talents to the Jewish community. He chaired two United Jewish Appeal Emergency drives for the State of Israel and the Israel Bond Campaign from 1969-71 and served on the National Cabinet of the United Jewish Appeal following his 1972 appointment to the first Young Leadership Cabinet by the governor of New York.
He also served in numerous organizations for local causes in Ohio and Florida including chairing fund drives for the Stark County and Palm Beach Humane Societies, Palm Beach American Heart Association, and Schepens Eye Research Center in Palm Beach. In the late 1990s he served on the board of the National First Ladies' Library, in 2001, he chaired the fundraiser for the Canton Palace Theater's 75th Anniversary, and, in 2007, was the honorary co-chair of the Jewish Welfare Fund Drive.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years and the love of his life, Sheila; his children, Jeff (Heather) Fisher; Barbara (Stanley) Rubin; Pamela Fisher (Michael) Dickson; Grandchildren, Jeremy Fisher, Alexander Fisher, Maxwell Fisher; Joseph (Ricki) Rubin, Rebekkah Rubin; Adam Dickson.
A memorial service will be Tuesday June 18, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. in Temple Israel, 432 30th St., Canton, Ohio 44709. In lieu of flowers memorial donations are requested to the Canton Jewish Community Federation or the Stark County Humane Society.
