Ida Cherkasly, at age 98, passed away on March 2, 2012 at the Windsor Medical Center. She was born Ida Irene Levin on November 28, 1913 in Canton, Ohio to Benjamin and Elsie (Rumsch) Levin and graduated from McKinley High School in 1931. Ida worked with her husband Albert in the family business, Ideal Cleaners before working as an assistant manager at Gay's shoe Store in downtown Canton. Mrs. Cherkasly was an honored volunteer at Aultman Hospital's Gift Shop where she volunteered 4,400 hours over a span of 18 and a half years. She was a member of the Shaaray Torah Synagogue and the Agudas Achim Congregation. Ida enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, and was an avid player of Shuffleboard, Rummy Q, Mahjong and Canasta. She was preceded in death by her husband Albert Cherkasly in 1988; brothers, Sam Levin, David Levin; sisters Rose Carnes, Dorothy Friedman, Alice Perlman and a nephew Jerry Levin. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Robert Slesnick of Canton; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Cathy Cherkasly of Boston, MA.; sisters, Sylvia Weisbrod and Charlotte Art; grandchildren, Brian Slesnick, Scott Slesnick and Josh Cherkasly; great grandchildren, Alec Slesnick, Melanie Slesnick, Madeleine Slesnick and Corinne Slesnick; nephews, Norman Carnes, Bernie Friedman, Greg Art, Brad Art, Steve Art; nieces, Doree Hafner, Maureen Aronson, Cheryl Schneider, Barbara Mueller, Jeannie DeFazio, Sandy Hermanoff and many great nieces and nephews and their children. Funeral services will be Monday, March 5th at 11:00 a.m. at the Arnold Funeral Home, 1517 Market Avenue North with Cantor Bruce Braun officiating. Interment will be in Canton Hebrew Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested to Shaaray Torah Synagogue or Agudas Achim Congregation. (Arnold-Canton 330-456-7291)
