Obituary

Howard J. Summers, age 98, of Canton, was born September 30, 1915 in Endicott, NY and passed away on Monday, January 20, 2014 in his home surrounded by family and friends. Howard was preceded in death by his parents John and Lura Summers and sister, Dorothy Malmsbury. He is survived by his wife, Georgeene (Whitehouse) Summers and two daughters, Barbara Ann Whitehouse (Pat Walter) and Cathy (Ronald) Skelton. Two grandchildren, Patrick Skelton and Erin (Ryan) Wilson. Two great-grandchildren, Bryce Skelton and Lauren Louise Wilson. Howard is also survived by a sister Doris Shafer of Wilmington, N.C. and nieces and nephews. Howard graduated from McKinley High School in 1934 and the Cleveland Institute Art in 1938. He studied in Beaux Arts, Paris and painting and drawing with Boleslaw Czedikowski in Bavaria and John Pike in Woodstock, NY. He studied painting with Aldro Hibbard, Roy Wilhelm Emile Gruppe, Charles Chicutty and Ken Gore in Glouster and Rock Port, Mass. He was Assistant Art Director of the Hoover Company for several years then relocated to Milwaukee, WI to design point of purchase advertising and promotional material for national advertised products. Howard joined Goodyear and worked for Aerospace for 30 years and was the Art Director on the Atomic Undersea and Space programs. He served 3 1/2 years mapping in WWII, taught mapping at the University of Kentucky and Ft. Belvoir, VA. Attended the christening and launching of "Thresher", one of the first nuclear submarines. He designed the missile display at the entrance of Pearl Harbor, taught art classes and demonstrated figure drawing along with oil and watercolor painting. He has exhibited locally and nationally including a prize in Paris, France and an invitation to exhibit there. Howard also exhibited and taught art classes at the old Canton Art Institute. He was past president of the Hall of Fame Toastmaster Club, past president of the Woodcarvers Club, enjoyed flying as a member of the Goodyear Wingfoot Flyers club, enjoyed golfing as a former member of Oakwood Country Club and an avid fly fisherman. He was a member of the mission and founding group for St. Mark's Episcopal Church and enjoyed singing in the choir. He has served as a senior warden and member of the vestry. He exhibited his paintings in one man shows and his woodcarvings as a member of the National Woodcarvers Association and enjoyed restoring old and damaged painting and frames. A memorial service will be held Friday 12 noon in St. Mark's Episcopal Church 515 48th St. NW with Fr. Dustin Berg officiating. Friends may call on Friday 10-12 p.m. in the church.
