Obituary

Hershel Smuckler, age 85, of Canton, passed away on Monday June 29, 2015 with his loving family by his side. He was born in Canton on September 26, 1929 to the late Harry and Lena Smuckler and graduated from Lehman High School in 1947. He attended Kent State University and was drafted into the Army in 1951 and served in the German Occupation during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he went to work in his family business, Fairmount Provision Company in Alliance, OH. His younger sister introduced him to Harlene Shifman and they married April 4, 1954. Together they raised a family and acquired Canton Hotel and Restaurant Supply where he was Past President and General Manager. He loved his job and family and never really retired. He was a member of Temple Israel, Brotherhood and Colleagues, bowled with B'nai B'rith, was a member of the American Legion Post # 44 and Jewish War Veterans. He had a passion for dancing, tennis and traveling. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Harlene; children Bill and Randi Smuckler of Canton, Howard and Linda Smuckler of Canton, Amy Smuckler of North Canton; 5 granddaughters Megan (Dr. Collin) Emerick of Columbus, Hillary Smuckler of New York City, Meredith Smuckler of Chicago, Samantha (William) Tortora of Basel, Switzerland, Cassandra (Michael J. Jackson) Smuckler of Cincinnati; sisters-in-law Pauline Smuckler of Canton, Ida Mae Pullan of Austin, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his new found love, his dog Chico. Preceded in death by sisters Yetta Goldstein, Freda Brockstein, Ida Solomon, Elaine Tenenbaum; and brother Allen Smuckler who worked side by side with Hershel all their lives. Funeral services will be held this Friday 11:00 AM at Arnold Funeral Home with Rabbi Jon Adland and Rabbi Emeritus John Spitzer officiating. Final resting place is North Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jewish Family Services at Canton Jewish Community Federation or Mazon Fund c/o Temple Israel. Address for both is 432- 30th St., NW, Canton, OH 44709.
