Obituary

Herschel Gene Grose, age 91, of North Canton, passed away on Sunday December 30, 2012 at Aultman Hospital in Canton. He was born in Scircleville, Indiana on February 1, 1921 to the late Herschel Kenneth and Anna Myrtle (Heaton) Grose. Herschel graduated cum laude from Indiana Central College in 1942. He joined the U. S. Navy during World War II, received training at Princeton University, and attended radar school at MIT where he met Charlotte Wilson while she was serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. They were married on April 14, 1944. During the War Lieutenant Grose served 18 months in the Pacific Theater as radar officer aboard the USS Tinosa, a Gato Class Submarine. He received a letter of commendation from Admiral Nimitz for excellent maintenance of secret electronic equipment used in a special mission near the Island of Okinawa. After the war, Herschel received his Doctorate Degree in Chemistry from Indiana University. Dr. Grose was a research chemist for DuPont and then joined the faculty at Marietta College as a chemistry professor in 1953. During his 32 year tenure at Marietta College, he served as Chairman of the Chemistry Department for 25 years, retiring in 1985. Once retired, he relocated to North Canton, and at the age of 84 he returned to teaching chemistry at Walsh University for 2 years. His professional publications have appeared in the Journal of the American Chemical Society of which he was a member. He traveled extensively in the American west with his family and during retirement toured 27 foreign countries. His hobbies included photography and developing his own pictures, tutoring in chemistry and math, being close to nature at his farm in southern Ohio, and providing inspiration to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Herschel was preceded in death by his wife Charlotte of 46 years on September 15, 1990, and son-in-law Peter Kelley on January 23, 2010. He is survived by his children Suzanne (Carl) Glendenning of Kingsport, TN, Steven (Carol) Grose of Hartville, OH, David (Deborah) Grose of San Antonio, TX, Sandra Kelley of South Jordan, UT, Gregory (Maryanne) Grose of Marietta, OH, Bonnie (David) Eigel of North Canton, OH; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; sister Betty Eberhardt of Indiana; other relatives and friends. The family held services on Sunday December 30, and will schedule a military committal service in the spring at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, OH.
