Obituary

Herbert H. Rosengard, age 82 of North Canton, passed away Wednesday morning, February 3, 2010 in Bethany Nursing Home. He was born August 2, 1927 in Chicago, IL. to Dr. Jerome and Sylvia (Pollock) Rosengard. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Illinois where he was a Varsity Football and Baseball letterman. Following graduation, he played baseball in the St. Louis Cardinal's farm system. Herb began his career at the Canton Jewish Community Center as the physical education director and youth director. Herb then became the director of the North Valley Jewish Community Center in Northridge, California. Returning to the Canton area as the assistant director of the Jewish Center in 1963, he later became the executive director until he retired in 1987. After retirement, Herb managed Arrowhead Country Club. Herb was in the inaugural class of the Stark County Wall of Fame. Herb was also very active in the Pro Football Hall Fame activities, having escorted several of the enshrinees, serving as head of security, and as chairman of the Balloon Festival. He was a member of the Canton Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. In addition, he was active in M.A.D.D., Ohio High School Football Championships, Division III Collegiate Championships, Sports for Israel, Plain Local Boosters and of all of his children's and grandchildren's activities. Herb is survived by his wife Vivian; daughter, Nancy Rosengard of Minneapolis, Minnesota; sons and daughters-in-law Jeff and Barbara Rosengard of Cleveland, Philip and Melanie Rosengard of Canton; brother and sister-in-law, Jordan and Betty Rosengard of Woodland Hills, California, and his grandchildren, Amy and Eric Rosengard. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Bethany Nursing Home. Funeral services will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Temple Israel with Rabbi John Spitzer officiating.
