Herbert Freed, age 84, of Canton passed away Thursday January 19, 2012 at McKinley Health Center after an extended illness. Born August 12, 1927 to Nathan and Sarah (Bernstein) Freed, Herb was a lifelong Canton resident and 1945 graduate of McKinley High School and WW II Veteran proudly serving in the U.S. Navy in the Philippines and Guam. He graduated from Kent State University with a Business degree and he opened the first Spencer Gifts store at Mellett Mall as a manager in the 1960's. Herb found a successful career thereafter as the owner of Freed Auto Supply and later as a self-employed automotive and tire salesman on the road. Herb also was a proud employee of the Coen Company where he set a record of selling the most antifreeze in one year in the company's 63 year history and was recognized as a top Stark County Business Leader in 1990 at the Canton Club. Herb was a longtime member of Shaaray Torah Synagogue and was an avid bowler on the Sunday B'nai B'rith men's bowling league at College Bowl for many years in the 1970's. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years Betty (Levin) Freed; his loving son Nelson Freed of Zoar who was his pride and joy; his loyal cousin, Lillian (Freed) Weinberger of Akron and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express thanks to the caring staff at McKinley Health Care for the past 4 ½ years. Funeral services will be Sunday 11:30 a.m. with Cantor Bruce Braun officiating. Interment will be in Canton Hebrew Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Shaaray Torah synagogue or a charity of the donor's choice.
