Henry H. Clapper MD, 90, passed away in Naples, Florida on July 2, 2013. Born on January 26, 1923, in Akron, Ohio, the son of Daniel and Mongee Clapper, Henry wanted to become a doctor of medicine from an early age. He graduated from the Ohio State University College of Medicine and later attended the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Surgery. Henry became a Surgical Resident at Mercy Hospital, Canton, Ohio; Chief Surgical Resident at Highland Hospital, Rochester, New York; and Staff Surgeon and Chief of Surgery at Timken Mercy Hospital, Canton, Ohio until his retirement. Dr. Clapper was also a Surgeon for the U.S. Steel Corporation in Canton for 29 years. Henry served as Captain in the U.S. Army Surgical Service at 98th General Hospital, Munich, Germany, and as Chief of Surgery at 48 MASH Hospital, Korea. Active throughout his medical career, Henry was Chairman of the Department of Surgery; Member of the American Colon and Rectal Society; Diplomat to the American Board of Surgery; Fellow of the American College of Surgeons; President of the Stark County Medical Society; and Delegate to the Ohio State Medical Association. Henry was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, as well as a Deacon and Trustee at Christ United Presbyterian Church, Canton. He was predeceased in death by his wife, Helenmae, 1994, and daughter, Suzanne, 1979. Henry is survived by his sister, Margaret (Wayne) Baker, Dayton, Ohio; son, Howe (Kimbi) Clapper, Columbus, Ohio; son, Dr. Wingate (Sandy) Clapper, Pewaukee, Wisconsin; son-in-law, Stephen (Susan) Rogers, Cincinnati, Ohio; grandchildren, Nathaniel and Mackenzie Clapper (Howe), and Eric Clapper (Wingate), and numerous loving nieces, nephews, and other relatives. The family will celebrate Henry's life in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. The family wishes to extend gratitude to all those who knew and loved Henry.
