Helen Dorain Sockel Cochrane, age 89, died August 30, 2008. Born in Akron, OH August 24, 1919 to the late Roy E. and Margaret (Bratton) Sockel she was a graduate of Akron Buchtel High School and attended Akron University. Helen moved to Canton in 1948, was an active member of Christ Presbyterian Church, worked as the church secretary for many years, was involved with the Mariners, Presbyweds, Presbyterian Women and was the first cook at Camp Wakonda. Helen was also involved with Harter School P.T.A., Chapter CX, PEO Sisterhood, Canton Women's Club, Canton Garden Club, and was an avid needle worker, quilter, knitter and loved gardening. In addition to her parents Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years: William Cochrane, Jr., sister: Jean Malcomb and a brother: Earl Sockel. Survivors include daughters: Mrs. Jerry L. (Suellen) Wassem of Beavercreek, OH and Mrs. Dominick (Barbara) Palombo of Canton. Three grandchildren: Heath Wassem of Mt. Kisco, NY, Heather Wassem Hyer of Cicero, NY, and Amy Palombo Trostle of Lake Jackson, TX and four great grandchildren. Helen enjoyed living at the Canton Regency playing cards and socializing with the residents. A memorial service will be observed in Christ Presbyterian Church and will be published in a later edition.
