IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Helen Marcile
Bachellor
November 20, 1905 – April 18, 2009
Helen Marcile Bachellor died on April 18, 2009 while surrounded by family and caregivers at St. Luke Lutheran Community in North Canton, Ohio. She was 103 years old. Marcile was born in Payne, Ohio on November 20, 1905 to Charles and Mary Barber and was the first of the four daughters they raised in that community. She grew into a confident, intelligent and fun-loving young woman and used these qualities to gain acceptance to the Ohio State University in Columbus. There she studied home economics and graduated in 1927 with a Bachelor of Science degree. That same year, Marcile married Dwight Bachellor, a pharmacist also from Payne. Together, they moved to Canton, Ohio and established Bachellor Pharmacy at 4th St. and Clarendon Ave., where it remained a fixture in the Canton community for over forty years. While Dwight ran the pharmacy, Marcile lovingly raised their two daughters; she was the consummate stay-at-home mom, attending to the needs of her immediate and extended families. She was also meticulous in all she did, from needle point to knitting to gardening to baking the most amazing pies that won awards at the Ohio State fair. Yet all the while her tireless efforts and accomplishments never interfered with her greatest gift: hospitality. Always gracious, always thoughtful and always welcoming, one never left her presence without feeling as if you had been personally served by her. Marcile is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mary Barber, daughter Shirley (died at three years), husband Dwight and sisters Marrietta, Kathleen and Betty. She is survived by daughters Beverly (Walter) Schwabe of Massillon, Ohio, Diane (Bob) Underhill of Carroll, Ohio, grandsons Richard (Mary Ann) Schwabe of Massillon, Ohio, Scott (Joan) Schwabe of Webster, New York, Rob (Rochelle) Underhill of Powell, Ohio, Charles (David Hibbard) Underhill of New York, New York and David (Howard Gatoff) of Columbus, Ohio as well as seven great-grandchildren. Friends may call on Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:30 P.M. in the Spiker-Foster-Shriver Funeral Home 4817 Cleveland Ave., N.W. A private funeral service will be held at 1:30 P.M. with Rev. Douglas A. Patton officiating. Interment will be in North Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the John Knox Presbyterian Church 5155 East Lake St., N.W. North Canton, OH 44720 where Marcile was a member, or to the St. Luke Lutheran Community 220 Applegrove St., N.E. North Canton, Ohio 44720.
