Obituary

Hazel (Gemmell) McDaniels January 8, 1921 - March 10, 2012 Hazel McDaniels, beautiful and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away at the Canton Regency Care Center on Saturday March 10, 2012, after a long and wonderful life. Hazel was born on January 8, 1921, in Glasgow, Scotland, the fourth of eight children to James and Martha Gemmell. She came to the United States in 1924, where like many new to this country, she was processed through Ellis Island. Hazel was raised in Hornell, New York, and graduated from Hornell High School in 1939. She married her life-long schoolmate Everett McDaniels on September 24, 1944. Together they had three children, David, Thom, and Beth Ann. She moved to Ohio with her family in 1952, and resided in Orrville, Ohio, for much of her adult life. Hazel had been a resident of Canton, Ohio, since 1989. Survivors include husband, Everett; children, David (Jane) McDaniels of Port Townsend, WA, Thom (Christine) of Massillon, OH, and Beth Ann (Michael) Stevens of Owings Mills, MD; grandsons, Iain and Tobias McDaniels, Jason Frost, Joshua and Benjamin McDaniels, and Christopher Stevens; great grandchildren Ethan Frost, Jake and Zeke McDaniels, and Jack Thomas, Maddie, and Livvie McDaniels; her devoted sister, Margaret Amphlett of Rochester, NY, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved granddaughter Allison Stevens. Hazel loved beautiful sunsets, ballet, a tidy house, the Scottish version of the 23rd Psalm, phone calls and letters, her Scottish heritage, baby's breath, violets, and heather, and football, particularly the New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Bucs. She delighted in a children's moon, soft music, dew drops on roses, the haunting sound of a train whistle, and most especially her grandchildren. She cherished the trips and the relationships she had with the ladies from the Canton Regency "Wednesday Lunch Bunch." Her stated wish was "it would delight me no end if my children's memories of me were as precious as my own mother's are to me." That's a wish that came true. A dedicated keeper of the peace and sharer of wisdom, perhaps her most important lesson was that "nothing dries quicker than a tear. . ." Friends are invited to the Arnold Funeral Home, 1517 Market Avenue North, Canton, on Wednesday March 14, 2012, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. A short prayer service will follow the visitation conducted by Kevin O'Brien. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a contribution to the Allison Taylor Stevens Memorial, Garrison Forest School, 300 Garrison Forest Rd, Owings Mills, MD 21117. A private family service is planned for the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. Arnold 330-456-7291 www.arnoldfuneralhome.com
