Obituary

Harry D. Wise, age 96, passed away peacefully at his apartment in the Colonies of Windsor Medical Center on Saturday, January 22, 2011. His loving wife of 70 years, Ruthanna Z. Wise, was with him. Harry was born on October 22, 1914 in Massillon, Ohio to the late Homer O. and Zella B. (Dunham) Wise. He graduated from McKinley High School in 1932 and Wittenberg University in 1937. For more than 40 years, he was an accountant. He began his accounting career as treasurer and steward for Alpha Tau Omega fraternity while earning his degree in business administration. Upon graduation, he worked for the Canton Repository in accounts receivable. With only a break during World War II when Harry served in France and the Rhineland as an Army Staff Sergeant with the 128th Reinforcement Battalion, from 1939 to 1965 he was the accounting manager for the Steubenville Herald Star. In 1965, he returned to Canton as internal auditor for Brush-Moore Newspapers, continuing in this position with Thomson Newspapers, Inc. until his retirement in 1979. For the next five years, he maintained his connection with Thomson as a consultant, training new accountants at newly purchased newspapers throughout the United States. Always community-minded, while in Steubenville, Harry was president of the Steubenville Jaycees and the Steubenville Kiwanis Club. He also served on the boards of directors for the Steubenville Chamber of Commerce, Steubenville Chapter of the American Red Cross, Ohio Valley Hospital, the Ohio Valley Savings and Loan, the Jefferson County Cancer Society, and as treasurer and board member of the Steubenville YMCA. He also served as an elder for the Second United Presbyterian Church, as a board member for Presbyterian Homes in Youngstown and the Ministerial Relations Committee of the Steubenville Presbytery. Upon his return to Canton, Harry continued his active participation in both his church and the community. He is a 34-year-member of Northminster United Presbyterian Church in North Canton, where he also served as an elder. Upon retirement, he and his wife tutored in the adult literacy program at Martin School for many years. For five years, Harry also advised the Walsh University Circle K Club. He has maintained his Kiwanis membership through the Canton Kiwanis Club, which recently acknowledged his 70-year-participation. He also is a 73-year member of William McKinley Masonic Lodge 431. For Harry, his family was his most important asset and source of pride. He is survived by his wife, Ruthanna Zeller Wise; daughter, Dr. Cynthia Wise Staudt; grandsons Adam Wise Staudt (Alexis) and Benjamin Wade Staudt (Rebecca); three additional "special" grandchildren, Ryan Hollinger (Erica), Corry S. Appline (Cheryl) and Klarisa M. Gaskins. His last years also were brightened by five great-grandchildren, Whitaker Wise Staudt, Olivia Claire Staudt, Hailey and Brandon Hollinger, and Alaina Joi Appline. A brother, Glenn David Wise (Mary) of Sylvania, Ohio also survives, along with two nephews. The family wishes to thank all of the staff at the Colonies of Windsor Medical Center for their loving care of Harry and their continued devotion to Ruthanna. They also want to acknowledge the loving concern of Dr. Anne-Kathrin Wielgosz, Therese M. Joseph, and Dr. John Kandl. A memorial service for Harry will be held on Friday, January 28, 2011 at 1p.m. at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 237 West Maple Street, North Canton, 44720 with the Rev. Matthew Skolnik officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor one hour before the service. Private burial on Friday morning will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Northminster Presbyterian Church or Walsh University. (Arnold 330-456-7291) www.arnoldfuneralhome.com
