George N. Swallow, age 86, of Hartville, passed away on Saturday December 5, 2009. He was born in Canton, Ohio on February 18, 1923 to Clarence R. and Ruth (Snavely) Swallow. A graduate of McKinley High School, he attended Kent State and North Carolina State and was the President of George N. Swallow, Inc. He served in the U. S. Army Air Force during WW II and the Korean War. He had given his time, his energy and his resources to a broad range of civic and cultural enterprises and was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church, Canton Rotary Club where he had been past president and had received recognition of 50 years of service in 2007, Wm. McKinley Lodge #431 F & A M, Scottish Rite Valley of Canton and 33rd degree recipient, and Congress Lake Club for over 50 years. He received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award and the Award of Merit from the Canton Chamber of Commerce and served as their Chairman of Properties Committee. He was Hall of Fame Festival Chairman in 1986- 1987, actively served on various Hall of Fame Committees and a fond remembrance was coordinating the appearance of the Hawaiian Performers. Mr. Swallow served as Director, Board Member and Chairman for United National Bank, served on the Advisory Board at Walsh College, and was a Board Member of House of Loreto, Salvation Army and the Masonic Association. He was a Fund Drive Chairman for Multiple Sclerosis Society, Chairman for Rally for Ralph Regula, and Past Treasurer for Stark-Wayne Lung Association. In 2007, the National Association of Realtors honored and bestowed upon Mr. Swallow the status of Realtor Emeritus. He was a member of Ohio Board of Realtors and Stark County Board of Realtors Assoc. Over the years George Swallow had been described as "the embodiment of a true gentleman", "dedicated, honorable and sincere", possessing a high degree of professionalism", and a "rare and remarkable person". He is survived by his wife of 58 years Jolene (Secrest); children Dr. Ward K. (Michelle) Swallow of Henderson, NV, Kristen L. Swallow of Columbus and Creighton W. Swallow of Hartville; granddaughters Sarah Swallow of Akron, Lanni and Allye Deskins of Columbus and Felecia and Morgan Swallow of Henderson, NV; sisters Phyllis (Dell) Ring of Canton and Mary Garmus of CA; brother-in-law Dr. Scott (Judy) Secrest of IN; and other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by brother Charles Swallow. Calling hours are Wednesday 5-8 PM in the Arnold Funeral Home Canton. Funeral services are Thursday 10 AM in Christ Presbyterian Church with Pastor Wendy Bausman and Pastor David de Vries officiating. Final resting place is North Lawn Cemetery.
