Obituary

George Wayne Roberts, 70, beloved husband, father, grandfather, professional engineer and pastor, passed away on July 19, 2009 in Mercy Medical Center following a two month battle with cancer. George was born in Detroit, Michigan and was preceded in death by his parents George T. & Agnes (Armstrong) Roberts Bourget, and his sister Mary Muller. A lake Township resident for 33 years, George grew up in the town of Hopkinton, in Northern New York. He returned to Michigan to attend Wayne State University then served in the U.S. Navy on a P2V-7 Neptune antisubmarine warfare patrol plane. After his service to the Navy George went on to work for Boeing. He was assigned to work on the Apollo program to build the first stage rocket that helped send America to the moon. In 1973 George began his work with Babcock and Wilcox, Nuclear Power Division in Lynchburg, Virginia coming to the Research and Development Division in Alliance in 1974. At Babcock & Wilcox George developed one of the first known quality assurance programs for scientific research, which resulted in the first book published on the subject, Quality Assurance in Research and Development. He later published his second book Quality Planning, Control and Improvement in Research and Development. He was project leader for two national standards for quality of research. George was a registered professional engineer and presented papers to technical groups in the United States and the United Kingdom, and was guest lecturer for the Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute. He was a fellow in the American Society for Quality, serving as past chair of the Akron/Canton Section, and recipient of the prestigious Basile Award from the Energy Division of ASQ. He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and was past chair of the Canton, Alliance, and Massillon section. In 1995 George experienced a call into ministry and began his studies at the Ohio Valley Course of Study at the Methodist Theological Seminary. In 1997, he was appointed as a part time pastor to Trinity United Methodist Church in Canton. Later in 1997, he retired from McDermott (Babcock & Wilcox). In 2001 he was appointed to Church of the Savior in Canton, where he served as Associate Pastor. He retired from full time ministry on June 30, 2009. George is survived by his wife: Sara Ray Roberts, his daughters Suzanne Fedorka(Tom) of Danville, Kentucky; Adrianne Beach (Brian) of Mountlake Terrace, Washington; Amy Harman (Tom) of Akron; and Ellen Hathaway (Jason) of Uniontown; and his son Kevin Roberts of Seattle, Washington. Also survived by 3 granddaughters Angelique Kopp (Josh), Cassandra Campbell, and Ashley Beach, 7 grandsons Andrew (Connie) and Christopher Harman; Benjamin, Samuel, and Nicholas Fedorka; and Alexander and Ian Hathaway. 2 Sisters: Jean Spaeth of Clinton Township, Michigan, and Dorothy Hurn of Rochester Hills, Michigan. He is also survived by 5 great grandchildren. Funeral service will be Thursday 11:00 A.M. in Church of the Savior United Methodist. Interment will be in Wood Cemetery Uniontown, OH. Calling hours will be on Wednesday from 5-8 P.M. in the Spiker-Foster-Shriver Funeral Home 4817 Cleveland Ave., N.W.
