Obituary

George R. Armour, age 90, of North Canton passed away Tuesday afternoon October 20, 2009 at the Canton Christian Home. He was born April 24, 1919 in Scotland to the late John and Margaret (Russell) Armour. They came to America in 1923 and made a home in Massillon. He graduated from Washington High School in 1937 and married Ann Crawford on July 15, 1942. George served in the US Army during WW II and the Korean War as a 1st Lieutenant in the Artillery and had been awarded various combat ribbons. For 54 years, George owned and operated George-Ann's Specialty Shops in North Canton, Canton and Massillon. A very active member of the N. C. Community, he was a member and Past president of N.C. Rotary, N.C. Chamber of Commerce and a founding member of the N.C. Jaycees. He was a lifetime member of N.C. YMCA and served on the Board of Managers, was a charter member of the N.C. Elks, and was a member of William McKinley Lodge No 431, F& AM and Scottish Rite of Canton. He received a special honor when he was inducted into the N.C. Hall of Distinction and was a winner of the Wayne Carpenter Award. A longtime member of Oakwood Country Club and Lakewood Country Club in Naples, FL, George enjoyed flying his Cessna Airplane, Boating on Lake Erie and golfing with his many friends here and in Florida. Preceded in death by a son William Armour in 1990; he is survived by his wife Ann; daughter Susan Armour and her children William and James all of Canton; son and daughter-in-law John and Connie Armour of North Canton; former daughter-in-law Beth (Mark) Hanlon; grandchildren, Andrew and Evanne Armour and Molly Hanlon all of Hartville. A memorial service will be held Saturday 11 AM in the Arnold Funeral Home with Chaplain Ron Iwanusa officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services Saturday 10-11 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Canton Christian Home. The family extends deepest gratitude to the Canton Christian Home Staff for there outstanding care and support.
