Gary David Smith, age 68 of North Canton, passed away Sunday morning, January 17, 2010 following a long struggle with Lewy body dementia. Born February 4, 1941 in Canton, Gary was a member of the last graduating class at Lehman High School. He attended Ohio State University and served in the U.S. Army Reserves before embarking on a career with New York Life Insurance that lasted 42 years. He was named a lifetime member of the industry's Million Dollar Round Table, a charter member of its Court of the Table, and received the Silver level of Knighthood for his donations to its charity-supporting foundation. A longtime member of Temple Israel, Gary served on its board of trustees and spent time on the board of the Canton Community Hebrew School. He loved traveling and driving his motorhome across America, visiting every state in the continental U.S. But no matter where he was, Gary loved people and was loved for it. Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Betty (Munk); three sons, Ryan (Jen Roher) of Toledo, Michael (Sharon) of Green, Jeffrey of Los Angeles; grandson Elijah Roher-Smith; mother-in-law Lillian Munk of Paris, Ohio. Preceded in death by his parents, Manny and Rose; son Scott, and sister, Beryl Myers. Funeral services will take place at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Temple Israel, 333 25th St. N.W., with Rabbi Leah Herz, Rabbi John Spitzer and Cantor Jen Roher officiating, followed by burial at North Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests any donations to Temple Israel or the Alzheimer's Association.
