Gail Coen, age 96, died peacefully on January 16, 2014, in Canton Christian Home where she had resided since 1997. She was born on July 4, 1917, to Mary Jeanette and Edward Russell. Her only sibling was her older sister the late Helen Boone of Scotts Vally, CA. Gail graduated from Canonsburg HS in 1935. Being chosen Miss Canonsburg to represent her town in the regional Miss Pennsylvania/Miss America contest was the highlight of her youth. In 1936 she married Carlton Coen of Washington, PA, on January 1, 1936, in Canonsburg and moved to Canton, OH, where Carlton became branch manager of the Ross Independent Oil Co., later known as Coen Oil Co. They were married 53 years until his death in 1989. Gail loved music (and dance!), playing the piano and organ at her home. She was a member of MacDowell Club, Manser Camera Club, BL Chapter of PEO Sisterhood, Gyro Club Gyrettes and chapel choir at Canton Christian Home. She was a 77- year member of Church of the Savior United Methodist where was a longtime member of United Methodist Women, Miriam Circle and with her husband Wesley Sunday School Class, later Wesley Fellowship and the YMCA Heritage Club. She and Carlton enjoyed travelling the world as well as attending his class reunions at the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. Gail is survived by son Donald (Jeanne) Coen of Canton; Janet (Dr. John) Gremer of Hayes, VA; and sons Edward Coen and Robert Coen and former daughter-in law Anne Clark Coen of Canton. She was proud grandmother of David (Kathy) Coen of Jamaica Plain, MA; Karen Flynn, Patricia Coen and Douglas (Rita) Coen of Canton; Jennifer (Scott) Stieler of Lewisburg, PA; Kevin (Mary Stuart) Gremer of Richmond, VA.; Dawn (Justin) Oleksy of Williamsburg, VA; John A. Gremer of Hayes, VA; Teresa Walters of Wilmington, NC; Daniel Coen, Laura (Steve) Reis, Linda (John Paul) Deuble and Christopher Coen of Canton. Her great grandchildren are Benjamin Coen, Elspeth Coen, Colter Flynn, Sophia Flynn, Adrianna Farmer, Courtney Farmer, Matthew Farmer (Jr.), Morgan Coen, Adam Coen, Eric Coen, Sydney Stieler, Benjamin Stieler, Kent Stieler, Jane Carlton Gremer, Anne Pearson Gremer, Juliana Oleksy, Carson Oleksy, Hayden Oleksy, Logan Oleksy, Chase Walters,Travis Walters, Meghan Lichtenwalter, Emily Musiska, Samual Reis, Allison Reis, Evan Jenkins, Colin Jenkins, Brooks Deuble; great, great grandchild Ellianna Musiska. Gail was loved and adored by her large family and even larger circle of friends. Her family wishes to acknowledge the entire staff at Canton Christian Home and thank them for their superb care during Gail's 16 year residency. On Monday, January 20, following a private burial at Northlawn Cemetery officiated by the Reverend Edward Fashbaugh, there will be a memorial service for family and friends officiated by Chaplain Ronald Iwanusa at the Canton Christian Home Chapel, 2550 Cleveland Ave. NW at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive guests at the chapel after the service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Gail Coen at Church of the Savior United Methodist, 120 Cleveland Ave. SE, Canton, OH 44702. Please sign the guest book.
